“I have experienced derealization long before I have known the term used for this phenomenon.
It is only recently that I discovered the term used to describe this feeling. This derealisation experience comes whenever I feel totally in the ruts. My depression would always lead to these weird feeling of being removed from everything in the world. It was a really scary and uncomfortable feeling.
It can sometimes last a couple of days especially if I feel really depressed. I consciously try to lift my depression through happy and light thoughts and other uplifting activities. In doing this, I feel like the color has returned to my vision. Everything slowly starts to become real once again. My existence and connection to this world is again awakened.
I believe our minds really have a role to play in the way we see and view reality. When I am depressed, things are bland and lack color and realism. But when I recover, I feel like things go back to their usual flair, color and life.”

“Many research study point to the suggestion that a derealisation phenomenon is the body’s way of protecting itself. It is like a brain anesthetic that shields you by numbing you for a while.
However, the sensation is so strange that it causes anxiety, making the feeling worse. It is a vicious cycle and the only way to stop it is to find ways to channel and control your anxiety so that the whole cycle ends.”

“I have found out that my symptoms of derealisation subside when I engage myself in a mental activity of some sort. During examination week, I notice that my symptoms were few and far between. Sometimes, they do not even occur at all. It was due to this that I tried out this experiment with myself. You can try out memorizing a random series of numbers or words. The more mental effort you put in, the more effective it is, at least for me. This can work by memorizing random objects but you can also tweak it like memorizing important phone numbers or other stuff. You get to have a chance at lessening the annoying symptoms of DR and you also have a chance to improve your memory on these important things.”

“Here are some techniques I have come up with to combat the DR:
1) Filter the stimuli you want to focus on. If the something frightens you, pay it no attention.
2) If you are incapable to avoid unwanted stimuli, put a conscious effort to control or deny those negative thoughts .
3) Workout. Physical exercise strengthens the body and makes us more healthier.
4) Develop a Winner’s mindset. No matter what the situation, always believe that you will conquer and beat all your foes. DR is a difficult thing to bear but you must have the mindset of a winner. Believe that no matter what happens, you can battle through DR and can live well despite this condition. Our mind feels confidence and you must train your subconscious mind to believe and live out this philosophy.”
